The ongoing dialogue between nature and creation is my 'base camp' in architecture as well as in art. The dialogue is both philosophical and practical. The philosophical point of view regards nature as a point of reference, inspiration and an anchor due to its natural intelligence, diversity, balanced existence and its infinite beauty. The practical perspective expresses a desire to find the balance between the need for development and the need to preserve the environment. This view seeks a way to minimize damage to the environment while blurring the boundaries into an integral combination of nature and structure.

The installation refers to the earth as a continuous casing from which houses are created. The intervention of massive construction projects creates a new and different landscape and indicates the damage caused by this action. In nature there is not an infinite amount of materiel therefore, the material that is used for construction is taken from nature leaving behind a void in its place.

The name of the installation 'Figure-ground' corresponds with the architectural term and refers to a concept from the Gestalt theory. In an architectural term, which is identified with the Nolli Plan, there is a distinction between the built space and the open space so that the symbiosis between them creates the complex space, which is greater than the composition of its components. In Gestalt the term is translated as a figure and its background. We perceive objects that look like a figure and relate to the rest as background so that one's power is created by the other. This ambivalence reinforces the reciprocal relationship between the character and the background and the parallel between architecture, environment and nature.

The installation expresses my "base camp" as a reminder of the strength and vitality of nature, as a source of observation and creativity, as a guide to action and a constant reminder to understanding our place in the world.
