Urban 'Siach'

Museum on the Seam, Jerusalem

Curator: Adrienne Goehler

Port Hangar 2, Jaffa , Israel
20.11.2015 - 12.12.2015
Curator: Jaffa Meir, Ben-Ami Amiel

combines two Hebrew words, which phonetically sound the same, yet they are written differently and each has a different meaning.

The word "שיח" (siach), which means ‘discourse’, and the word "סיח" which describes a metal rod, a skewer, wrapped with meat.

The phonetic duality they share echoes the constant struggle between the need to find housing solutions, which often happens at the expense of agricultural land, and the need to sustain our nutrition.

The installation simulates a dense tall urban landscape elevated on stilts, with minimal footprint.

The land beneath remains vacant for growing food crops and enables the dual existence of the city and the food.

The image of a "סיח"(skewer) structure corresponds with the representation for food on the one hand, and at the same time it reflects the idea that we are 'skewering' ourselves and bringing destruction by continuously harming our environment.

Materials: concrete, steel
Dimensions: 50x50x85 cm
